Abstract:
Solution and solid-state NMR experiments are conventionally conducted on a relatively narrow set of NMR-active isotopes, including such favourites as 1H, 13C, 15N, 19F, and 31P. This is due, in equal parts, to the ubiquity of their elements in many branches of chemistry and to the general ease of acquiring their spectra. However, the majority of NMR-active nuclides in the Periodic Table are classified as unreceptive to the NMR experiment, for reasons including low Larmor frequencies, low natural abundances, inconvenient relaxation characteristics, and/or extremely broadened anisotropic patterns. Recent work at the MagLab conducted by our Users, Research Facility, and Affiliates, has demonstrated that the combination of high magnetic fields and clever pulse sequences and methodologies is starting to open up the Periodic Table to increasingly routine investigation by solid-state NMR. In this lecture, I will discuss how this is done, and present a showcase of solid-state NMR spectra from unreceptive nuclei such as 10B, 17O, 35Cl, 43Ca, 65Cu, 67Zn, 79Br, 95Mo, 99Ru, 103Rh, 109Ag, 195Pt, and more!
