Education and Earth Week
The Spring 2020 issue of fields magazine is now available online, at either fieldsmagazine.org or as a PDF download, or from the digital publisher Issuu, available through your web browser or the Issuu app. It’s all free.
The cover of this issue honors the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this month. Art Director Caroline McNiel gathered the makings of it from her yard and neighborhood. We invite you to explore its hidden messages.
Caroline is like so many others who have been ordered to stay at home due to state and local mitigations toward the COVID-19 pandemic. She has used this time to inspire her creative streak and you can do the same. You can even introduce NMR to others at home by letting children build their own high field magnets and probes!
With the use of simple models, you can visualize the basic design features of the high field magnets we use in our research. For detailed instructions, check out this fields magazine article, from one of several back issues available online. You can recycle some of your empty toilet paper tubes using these simple blueprints, sketched from the real-life 900 MHz, 21.1-tesla NMR–MRI magnet and 45-tesla hybrid magnet and their various sample probes, as featured on our own NMRprobe website! Once the models have been built, you can explore their use through these Science Highlights from the National MagLab, which feature published research projects that have been distilled into short articles for a general audience.
Have a great time finding inspiration for ways to make your own BIG IMPACT!
